Shop Scrimshaw
Claudia is best known for "Hawaiian Scrimshaw." She began defining her technique of this nautical folk art during the late 70's in Lahaina, Maui - the scrimshaw capitol of the world. Her work, done on fossilized bone (pendants) and ancient ivory tusks of walrus and wooly mammoth that are reclaimed from the icy soil of St. Lawrence Island by resident Eskimos. Many of the pieces are artifacts such as net sinkers, sled runners and spear tips. Her island images are engraved much the same way it was done two-hundred years ago by the Yankee whalers, but the caliber of artwork is world class. Claudia has won first place in the prestigious Hawaiian International Scrimshaw Competition, among the most gifted scrimshaw artists in the world.
