Claudia Moeller
Claudia is best known for "Hawaiian Scrimshaw." She began defining her technique of this nautical folk art during the late 70's in Lahaina, Maui - the scrimshaw capitol of the world. Her work is done on fossilized bone (pendants) or acient ivory tusks (letter openers and artifacts on wood stands) of walrus and wooly mammoth which are reclaimed from the icy soil of St. Lawrence Island by resident Eskimos. Many of the pieces are artifacts such as net sinkers, sled runners and spear tips. Her island images are engraved much the same way it was done two-hundred years ago by the Yankee whalers, but the caliber of art work is world class. Claudia has won first place in the prestigious Hawaiian International Scrimshaw Compitition, among the most gifted scrimshaw artists in the world.
